Council Candidates Questionnaire Responses


Our councils hold a lot of power when it comes to deciding things like river protection, fossil fuel extraction and the sustainable (or not) future of our region. To help Taranaki residents decide who to vote for, we asked our 107 district and regional council candidates (less 3 who didn’t have email addresses) to answer 12 short questions. Many did not respond but those who did had very interesting answers which are encouraging to read. We would like to thank the 19 candidates who took the time to respond. NZ carved up more for oil and gas!


The NZ government has just launched its so-called consultations with iwi, hapu and local authorities on its proposed 2014 Block Offer for oil and gas exploration permits (NZ Herald, 18 Sept 2013).

Block Offer 2014 Taranaki LRAt the same time Parihaka whanau discussed the threat of up to 12 more wells being drilled nearby offshore by OMV and AWE noting that both these Austrian and Australian companies have caused oil spills here before. Parihaka’s stance remains firm.

MEDIA RELEASE: ‘Tin Can’ not welcome!


Just as the Maari oil field 80 km off the Taranaki coast was being shut down temporary for vessel repair, a drilling rig nick-named ‘Tin Can IV’  has begun drilling the Manaia-2 well nearby. “Recently refurbished, the aging rig Kan Tan IV earned its nick-name from a history of problems, disrepair and questionable conditions, abroad and in NZ,” explained Catherine Cheung, Researcher of Climate Justice Taranaki.  Read the rest of this entry »
